Cross Platform Sports Writing & Reporting
The course provides students with instruction and practice in writing and reporting sports for various media platforms (online/print, broadcast and audio and social media). Through interviewing, lectures, writing, reporting, readings and guest speakers, students will develop a strong understanding of sports journalism. Students will learn how to write and present stories on a variety of digital platforms.
Sports Culture
The course examines the role of sport in contemporary American society. Students will examine the way sport is linked to the structure and dynamics of social life. Particular attention is devoted to an analysis of the interrelationship between sport, society, social organization and social change.
Sports, Media & Society
The course helps students define what sport and how sports have been created and organized in various ways. It also provides discussion and analysis around sports as it intersects family, education, politics, the economy, the media, religion, gender, social class, race and ethnicity. The course also examines social organization, social interaction patterns and amateur sports within the overall sports landscape.
Radio, Television & Newswriting
The course helps students learn the basics of broadcast news writing for both radio and television as well as news gathering and production. Students will learn how to write scripts, re-write wire copy and newspaper copy for radio and TV broadcasts. The class will consist of the following: lecture, hands on work utilizing techniques of news gathering, research, interviewing skills, writing news stories and special guests who are currently working or who has worked in the broadcast industry.
